Our mosquito control solutions

First, contact us. Many mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn, though some species bite during the day as well. Protect yourself by applying insect repellent with EPA-approved active ingredients to exposed skin whenever mosquitoes may be present. To help reduce breeding sites, empty, refresh, or replace standing water at least once a week, including bird baths, tarps, pet bowls, kiddie pools, and any container that can hold even a tablespoon of water. Keep grass and vegetation trimmed to reduce shaded resting areas where mosquitoes may hide. Check that window and door screens are properly fitted and free of tears or openings. Don’t forget your pets—talk with your veterinarian about preventative medications to help protect them from mosquito-borne illnesses.

Different Kinds of Mosquitoes

Aedes Mosquitoes

Often referred to as “container mosquitoes,” Aedes mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters that commonly breed in small amounts of standing water around homes.

Typical breeding sites include flowerpots, buckets, children’s toys, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and discarded tires. Aedes larvae, also called wigglers, breath through air tubes and are often found hanging down at an angle in water. Easily recognized by their black bodies with distinctive white markings, Aedes mosquitoes often bite around the ankles, legs, and arms during daylight hours.

Unlike species that prefer larger water sources, Aedes mosquitoes thrive in close proximity to people, making routine yard maintenance and water management especially important. In regions where these diseases are present, Aedes mosquitoes are also associated with transmitting viruses such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever.

Culex Mosquitoes

Culex mosquitoes are most active from dusk through the night and are known carriers of West Nile virus. They typically lay eggs in more stagnant or longer-standing water sources, including storm drains, drainage ditches, neglected pools, birdbaths, and water-holding containers around the yard. Also called wigglers, Culex larvae hang down at an angle under water just like Aedes larvae.

Unlike some mosquito species that remain primarily outdoors, Culex mosquitoes are commonly found around homes and may readily enter structures to bite both people and pets indoors.

Anopheles Mosquitoes
Anopheles mosquitoes are the group known to transmit malaria and are common, aggressive biters.

They are often recognized by their distinctive resting posture, with the body angled upward instead of lying flat against a surface. Their larvae are also unique, resting parallel to the water’s surface rather than hanging downward like many other mosquito species. Anopheles mosquitoes are typically associated with freshwater habitats, including ponds, marshes, drainage ditches, and other natural or semi-natural water sources where breeding can occur.
