Big Headed Ant

Our remedy for big headed ant control

First, contact us. Because big headed ants are soil nesters, their colonies are often easy to see due to piles of displaced soil formed as they excavate tunnels in the ground. Most colonies are small and relatively easy to treat with professional products, but treating infestations involving multiple colonies requires specialized ant control expertise.

How to Identify a Big Headed Ant

Appearance

Light brown to dark reddish brown; 1/16″ to 1/8″ long.

Habitat

Big headed ants enter buildings occasionally, preferring to nest in protected soil such as under stones, leaf litter, mulch, patio blocks, slabs and firewood. These ants are also commonly found inside the soil of potted plants, and many big headed ant control problems may be traced to planters. As the name implies, the major workers’ heads are very large in proportion to their bodies.

Diet

This species likes to feed on a wide variety of foods including dead insects, plant materials and garbage. The workers are partial to the sweet honeydew produced by aphids, scales and mealybugs. Inside, they forage for meats, grease, liver, molasses, peanut butter, pet foods and fruit juices.

FAQ About Bigheaded Ants

How Did I Get Bigheaded Ants?

Bigheaded ants often enter homes in search of food and shelter. They are attracted to moisture and can enter through cracks in foundations, walls, and windows. Outdoor factors such as mulch, garden debris, and decaying wood can also attract these ants to your property. Once inside, they can establish nests in wall voids, under floors, and behind baseboards.

What Are the Signs of a Bigheaded Ant Infestation?

Signs of a Bigheaded ant problem include the presence of worker ants trailing to food sources, piles of soil or sand near foundations (indicating nesting sites), and visible nests in lawns or garden areas. You might also find these ants nesting under rocks, logs, and other debris outside your home.

How Dangerous Are Bigheaded Ants?

Bigheaded ants are not directly dangerous to humans as they do not sting and are not known to transmit diseases. However, they can cause structural damage by nesting in wood and insulation. Additionally, their large colonies can become a nuisance, and they can contaminate food sources as they forage.

How to Get Rid of Bigheaded Ants?

Getting rid of Bigheaded ants involves a comprehensive approach. Start by maintaining a clean home, sealing entry points, and removing sources of moisture. Outdoor management includes trimming vegetation away from the house, removing debris, and addressing any decaying wood. Professional pest control services are often necessary to effectively eliminate these ants, as their colonies can be extensive and require specialized treatments.

What About Preventing Bigheaded Ant Reinfestation?

Preventing Bigheaded ant reinfestation involves ongoing maintenance and monitoring. Regularly inspect your property for signs of ant activity, seal any new cracks or entry points, and keep your home and yard clean. Professional pest control services can provide regular treatments and inspections to ensure that these ants do not return.

Do Bigheaded Ants Bite?

Yes, bigheaded ants can bite, but their bites are not harmful to humans. The bite may cause minor discomfort but generally does not lead to any serious health issues. If you are experiencing a bigheaded ant problem, it’s best to address it promptly to avoid any nuisances.

Where Do Bigheaded Ants Nest?

Bigheaded ants prefer to nest in soil, often creating small mounds around their nests. They can also be found nesting under rocks, logs, and other debris in your yard. Inside homes, they may nest in wall voids, behind baseboards, or under floors. Identifying and targeting these nesting areas is crucial for effective control and elimination.
