Wolf Spider Control in Southwest Michigan, Indiana and the Greater Louisville Region
Seeing a big, fast spider dart across the basement or garage floor can get your attention pretty quickly. Wolf spiders are common throughout the Midwest and usually prefer living outdoors, but they sometimes make their way into homes while searching for prey, shelter or a place to hide.
Franklin Pest Solutions provides professional wolf spider control in Southwest Michigan, Indiana and the Greater Louisville region. Our pest management professionals look beyond the spider you happened to spot. We inspect for entry points, hiding areas and other insect activity that may be giving wolf spiders a reason to stick around.
What Is a Wolf Spider?
Wolf spiders belong to the spider family Lycosidae. They are active hunters, which makes them different from many of the spiders homeowners commonly find around their properties.
Instead of building a web and waiting for dinner to arrive, wolf spiders move around and hunt their prey. Their speed, relatively large size and hairy appearance are some of the reasons they tend to alarm people when they show up indoors.
Depending on the species, wolf spiders may be brown, gray or a combination of earthy colors with lighter stripes or markings. One of their most distinctive features is their eye arrangement. They have eight eyes arranged in three rows, including two noticeably large eyes that help them hunt.
Wolf spiders are beneficial predators when they’re outdoors. Inside your house, however, they’re usually an unwelcome surprise.

Where Do Wolf Spiders Live?
Outdoors is where wolf spiders would generally rather be. They can be found in yards, gardens, wooded areas and other places that provide cover and plenty of insects to hunt.
Around homes, look for them near:
• Rocks
• Logs and firewood
• Leaf litter
• Mulch
• Landscaping timbers
• Tall grass and ground cover
• Debris around foundations
When wolf spiders get inside, they tend to stay closer to the ground and seek out quiet, protected areas. Basements, crawl spaces, garages, utility rooms and storage areas can all provide suitable hiding places.
Unlike orb weavers and many other common spiders, wolf spiders don’t create large capture webs. So if you’re trying to figure out where one is living, don’t expect to find a big web nearby.
Are Wolf Spiders Dangerous?
Their appearance may say otherwise, but wolf spiders aren’t aggressive toward people. Their first response is generally to run away.
Like other spiders, wolf spiders have venom that helps them subdue their prey. They can bite if they are trapped against the skin, handled or otherwise threatened, but bites are uncommon.
A bite may cause localized pain, redness or swelling. Wolf spiders are not considered medically significant spiders.
If you’re unsure what type of spider you’ve found, don’t rely on color or size alone. Several Midwest spider species can look similar at a glance, and proper identification can help determine whether pest management is necessary.
Wolf Spider FAQs
Why am I finding wolf spiders inside my home?
Wolf spiders sometimes make their way indoors while hunting for insects or looking for protected areas. Frequent sightings can also mean there are plenty of other pests nearby providing them with a reliable food source.
Do wolf spiders use webs to catch insects?
No. Unlike many common house spiders, wolf spiders don’t depend on webs to capture prey. They roam and actively hunt insects using their speed and eyesight.
Is a wolf spider bite dangerous?
Wolf spiders have venom that they use to subdue their prey, but their bites are not generally considered medically significant to people. Bites are uncommon because these spiders typically try to escape rather than defend themselves.
Does one wolf spider mean I have a spider problem?
Not necessarily. An occasional wolf spider may simply have wandered inside. If you’re finding them repeatedly, however, it could be a sign of accessible entry points or an abundance of insects they’re hunting.
When am I most likely to see wolf spiders?
Wolf spider activity is most noticeable during the warmer months when insect populations are high. They may also wander into or around structures as temperatures and seasonal conditions change.
