For Part 2 of our Termite Awareness Week series we’re going to be covering everything about termite information and termite inspection. If you haven’t read it already, you should check out the kick off post This is Termite Awareness Week before continuing.

One of the best informational resources for all things pest is the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), the creators of Termite Awareness Week. It seems only fitting to start with some termite information and facts from and the Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA).

  • Termites are wood-destroying insects whose presence dates back to the dinosaurs.
  • Termites are known as “silent destroyers” because of their ability to chew through wood, flooring and even wallpaper undetected.
  • There are about 2,000 known species of termites in the world.
  • The most common termite species found in the United States are subterranean termites, Formosan termites, dampwood termites, drywood termites.
  • Subterranean termites are by far the most destructive species of termite as they eat 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Each year, termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage.
  • Termite colonies can have upwards of 2 million members.
  • Termites are present in 70 percent of countries across the world and their population outnumbers human beings on a ratio of ten to one.
  • The queen termite can lay up to 40,000 eggs per day.

Those are a lot of facts, figures and other numbers that all add up to complete and total destruction of your house or home if the termites have their way! The worst part is that most people don’t know it’s happening because they got the nickname “silent destroyers” for good reason. Don’t believe us? Let’s hear from Dr. Jim Fredericks, the chief entomologist from the NPMA, in his Ask the Pest Professor segment.

Yes, you read and heard all that correctly. Repairing the massive amount of damage to everything from wallpaper and books to structural supports and wood that termites inflict 24/7 are typically not covered by homeowner’s insurance.
