German Cockroach

Our remedy for German Cockroach control in Southwest Michigan, Indiana and the Greater Louisville region

First, contact us. German cockroach control in Southwest Michigan, Indiana and the Greater Louisville region requires a thorough approach because these pests reproduce quickly and spend much of their time hidden in cracks, crevices, and wall voids near food and moisture sources.

German cockroaches are considered a public health pest and can quickly spread throughout a property if left untreated. Professional control focuses on identifying harborages, reducing active populations, and targeting the areas where cockroaches live and breed. Carefully placed baits and other targeted treatments can be highly effective, but proper placement and ongoing monitoring are critical for long-term success.

Because even a small number of surviving cockroaches can rebuild an infestation, early intervention is the best way to protect your home, family, employees, or customers.

How to Identify a German Cockroach

Appearance

German cockroaches are small, light brown cockroaches that grow to about 1/2 inch long. They are easily identified by the two dark stripes on the pronotum, the shield-like plate located just behind the head. Adults have wings but rarely fly. Young German cockroaches, called nymphs, look like smaller, darker versions of the adults and do not yet have wings. Because German cockroaches reproduce quickly, it is common to find both adults and nymphs living together in an infestation.

Habitat

German cockroaches prefer warm, humid areas and are most commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, and other locations where food and moisture are readily available.

During the day, they hide in cracks, crevices, cabinets, clutter, and behind appliances near food and water sources. German cockroaches are often introduced into homes and businesses through grocery bags, cardboard boxes, food packaging, and other items brought indoors.

Diet

German cockroaches are opportunistic scavengers that will feed on a wide variety of materials. While they prefer food scraps, grease, and crumbs, they can also consume pet food, paper products, soap, glue, toothpaste, and other organic materials when food sources are limited.

German Cockroach FAQ

What Do German Cockroaches Eat?

German cockroaches are omnivores and will eat almost anything available. Their diet includes crumbs, grease, food scraps, and even non-food items like glue, paper products, soap and toothpaste. Keeping your home clean and free of food debris is crucial in preventing these pests from finding a food source.

Do German Cockroaches Fly?

Although German cockroaches have wings, they rarely fly. Instead, they prefer to run quickly across surfaces. Their wings are more often used to glide short distances or escape danger.

How Do German Cockroaches Spread?

German cockroaches spread primarily through human activity. They can hitch a ride on packages, grocery bags, second-hand items, backpacks, clothing, and used appliances. Once inside a home or business, they can quickly move from room to room, especially in multi-unit buildings. Regular inspections and maintaining cleanliness can help in controlling their spread.

Do German Cockroaches Bite?

German cockroaches are capable of biting, just like how they’re capable of flying, but they rarely do. It is not advised to ignore a cockroach infestation, however, due to the health issues they pose.

Can Cockroaches Cause Allergies?

Yes, cockroaches can cause allergies. The allergens they produce come from their saliva, feces, and shedding body parts. These allergens can trigger symptoms such as sneezing, skin rashes, and asthma attacks, especially in children. Maintaining a cockroach-free environment is essential to minimize these health risks.

What Are Some Health Risks From German Cockroaches?

German cockroaches pose several health risks. They can carry bacteria and pathogens on their bodies, contaminating food and surfaces. This can lead to illnesses such as food poisoning, dysentery, and gastroenteritis. Ensuring a thorough and regular pest control program can mitigate these risks.

How Can I Keep Roaches Away From My House?

To keep roaches away from your house, it’s important to maintain cleanliness, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Seal any cracks and crevices where they might enter and fix any leaks or moisture problems, as cockroaches are attracted to water sources. Using good sanitation best practices, preventative measures and professional pest control services can help keep your home cockroach-free. We are happy to help you learn how to keep cockroaches away from houses.

What Attracts German Cockroaches to My Home?

German cockroaches are attracted to warm, humid environments with easy access to food and water. Kitchens and bathrooms are common hotspots due to the availability of these resources. Reducing clutter, fixing leaks, and storing food in sealed containers can make your home less appealing to these pests.

How Do I Know If I Have a German Cockroach Problem?

Signs of a German cockroach problem include seeing the roaches themselves, especially at night, finding small droppings that look like black pepper, and noticing an unpleasant musty odor. You might also find their egg cases in hidden areas. If you observe any of these signs, it’s important to take action quickly. Please reach out to us for a free quote.
