Women in Science: Bug Girls On A Mission
Although women make up nearly half of the workforce, less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women. The bug girls want to help change those statistics. By encouraging girls to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) we can make a difference. For those of you that may not know us- we are The Bug Girls of Franklin Pest Solutions. We are on a mission to encourage young women to pursue careers in science! Whether we’re giving mosquito advice on WLKY or tie-dying t-shirts with our naturalist friends at the Dune’s Learning Center, we are constantly sharing our passion for community education, public health, and pollinator awareness. Learn what each Bug Girl brings to the table. Collectively, our favorite part of our jobs is the variety of ways we get to make a positive change in our communities, paving the way for others to follow in our footsteps.
Planting Pollinators with the Girl Scouts
As well as a shared love for science, we each have additional passions that fuel our focus and help us connect deeper to the communities we serve. Sharing our individual passions has led us to join forces with the Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana Girl Scouts, and the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois. We had such a blast sharing bug love and planting a pollinator garden with Troop 25774 that we knew we had to do more with the scouts. What’s next? Glad you asked! The Bug Girls are working on special programming to help scouts of various age groups achieve badges in bugs, nature, pollinators, gardening and more. We’re even brainstorming to create our very own badge! We’ll eventually be able to share our programs with the Girls Scouts of Central Indiana and also the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Stay tuned to follow our journey!
Putting Kids First
Children are our future! Inspiring a child to pursue science today may lead to life-changing future discoveries. The ability to invest in partnerships that reach future scientists and entomologists gives us great pride. Other than partnering with children’s museums, schools, girl scouts, and nature museums, we also keep a continuously growing list of resources for bug-lovers. Check out bug crafts, costumes, and bug activities. Also, Pestworldforkids.org is a great teaching resource organized by grade level. The site follows the education standards from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Barbie You Can Be Anything: The Experience
One of our absolute favorite museums, Indianapolis Children’s Museum, has extended one of our favorite exhibits. If you haven’t been there lately, you have got to check out the Barbie You Can Be Anything: The Experience! exhibit. Franklin is a proud sponsor of this career inspiring exhibit that spans across the timeline of Barbie. Barbie fans old and new can take a look at how far Barbie has come in the past 60 years. “Celebrate the Barbie legacy while experiencing activities that inspire limitless potential.”
